About Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plan Options

When choosing a plan you must decide if you want to receive the Original Medicare Part A and Part B benefits plus determine if additional coverage is needed.  You must decide if a Medicare Advantage plan is a good fit for your lifestyle and budget and if the plan supports you needed coverage.  Working with a licensed insurance agent is essential to properly pick a good plan.

Medicare Part A

Part A generally covers the following

  • Hospital care
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Nursing home care( must have more than custodial care)
  • Hospice
  • Home health services
Medicare Part B

Part B is covering types of service or supplies that are needed to diagnose or treat a medical condition and preventative services such as the flu.  It also covers items like:

  • Clinical research
  • Ambulance services
  • Durable Medical equipment
  • Mental Health
  • Some outpatient prescription drugs
  • Supports multiple opinions before a surgery
Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is a Medicare prescription drug plan offered by private insurance companies. This can be a standalone drug plan or be part of a Medicare Part C health plan which covers at minimum hospital costs and medical services covered by Medicare Part A and B.

Medicare Advantage Plans

This is a type of Medicare health plan that is offered by private insurance companies but they are contracted by Medicare.  They provide all the Part  A and Part B benefits. They include

  • Health Maintenance Organizations(HMO)
  • Preferred Provider Organizations(PPO)
  • Private Fee-for-Service Plans
  • Special Needs Plans
  • Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans
